Love is just around the corner…well at least Valentine’s Day is.

I could be poetic and talk about love in the spirit of the holiday. Love for our family, friends and/or a spouse. A mother’s love for a child. Love for our country. Love for our God.

And of course, a love for this hobby. When I first started metal detecting, I fell in love with the thrill of the hunt metal detecting brings. As this monthly hunt continues to thrive, I appreciate all of you that share that same love.

October always brings cooler temps to our area, and Halloween decorations on almost every block in Jax Beach. And what better way to celebrate the spooky season than with error coins.

An error coin is a coin that was printed incorrectly by a mint. Some error coins can be worth hundreds, if not thousands of dollars in the right market. I’ve always had a fascination with error coins, often collecting them over the years.

So for today’s treasures, I’ve set out some of these error coins to find. Below you will see the various errors listed along with some regular damaged clad tossed in for fun. We will head to lucky number 13 Ave South to seek out the unnormal.

Fall definitely is in the air. After such a rainy summer, cool weather came quickly here. I’m sure we will see October with warm days ahead, but it’s certainly been nice to feel the cool temps lately.

However, that didn’t stop the beaches from being busy on the weekends still. Lots of people still visiting Jax Beach, hotels are still being packed, while tourists try to get in those last few trips to the beach before the warm water turns cold.

Today we will start around 16th Ave North, and head north as we search for treasure.

To me, June, July and August are the best months of the year. I always enjoy this season the most, and hate to see it come to an end. Especially this summer, it seemed to be full of rain and storms more than normal.

The key to happiness….

Most have different answers to this question. But overall it’s usually something you love.

As a child, my mom would take me with her to visit her friends. She loved to talk and visit for hours. I often would try to find things to play with or do, but like most children would eventually get bored. My mom’s friend Myrtle had a beautiful old southern mansion, with tons of old antiques and grand piano in the main entrance to the house. I often would bang the keys until they complained, but it was often Myrtle who would tell the other adults to leave me alone. “She’s just as sweet as a cherry on top”, often I would hear her refer to me as other adults scolded. As I’ve grown older, I’ve appreciated those times, not realizing how unique it was to get such opportunities. .

Often when I drive through Neptune Beach, I think of her. I think about how my love for banging the piano was lost over the years, but my love of creativity didn’t. Influences over the years certainly can be accredited to those who let me be me, especially people like Myrtle.

Ah summertime…

Tourist are back in Jacksonville Beach in full swing. Beach chairs, umbrellas and the smell of sunblock is everywhere. Business certainly has picked up around town. Most of the hotels, vacation rentals, and restaurants are full. It's been nice to see things head back to normal, hopefully for good.

One of my favorite spots, because it's a quieter area, is 19th Ave North. At night as you look North, you can see the blue lights on top of One Ocean hotel in Atlantic Beach, since this area is usually darker and away from downtown Jax Beach's lights. It has this long beautiful walkway that you see in the photo above, that always seems like it's taken from a postcard.

It’s been two years since I started Hunt the 27th. Wow.

So thankful to those who keep coming back out each month, those who have came out once or twice trying to give George a run for his money, and those who just happen to be passing thru our area who joined in on the fun. Jim who reaches out to me via email from Canada when he holds his own “hunt the 27th” to show me his latest finds. And others who send messages of encouragement and thanks. Really can’t express truly how much I appreciate it all.

For this hunt, I decided to add coins from various years as a memorial to the history of American wars for memorial weekend. I wasn’t able to have a coin for every war year, but I was able to cover most. I started with the Revolutionary War with the Spanish Real 1780, then continued throughout history to present day. I included a peace dollar since it plays such an important part of history memorializing World War I.

Simply put, thank you to those who served or are serving in our military, to those who gave their lives, and to their families.

We’re headed back to Mickler Beach this morning. Once you reach the beach from the parking lot, head 3 houses north.

Mick-ler or Mike-ler?

It’s MIke-ler according to the generations of Mickler family members that moved here as early as the 1820s from Germany. Sidney Mickler, built a 600-foot-long fishing pier out of palm logs in the 1930s without power tools at what is now known as Mickler’s Landing Beach in Ponte Vedra Beach.

I recently learned of the old pier at Mickler’s Beach just this week. Tide has been low enough to show the remains of old pier palm logs this week. In 1947 a hurricane destroyed the pier, and a few pilings remain near the entrance.

Once you leave the parking lot here and reach the beach, head south. Below are the treasures to be found just as the first homes have steps to the beach. Here’s to hopefully finding a few sharks teeth too!

I overslept this morning.First time I have messed up the hunt. I often have insomnia and this morning I guess my mind decided to cut off the alarm!!

America the beautiful, land that we love.

Our country has a rich history of ideology to help its follow Americans, and beyond. The inventions, organizations and education Americans have generated in our young nation has brought positive change in our world.

In 1912, two Jacksonville Beach citizens founded the American Red Cross Volunteer Life Saving Corps. As of today, this non profit volunteer corps is the last of it’s kind in our country. The building itself was listed in 2014 in the National Register of Historic Places Program. Over the years, this non profit has saved thousands of lives, volunteers have donated millions of hours to the community, and educated thousands of people throughout the world.

After WWI, the Peace dollar was Minted between 1921-1935. This year there will be a commemorative coin produced to mark the centennial year of the design. For this hunt, I have placed a peace dollar in each of the two cases as seen in the photos below.

Halloween. Time for something different.

Some people find the abnormal scary, others find it interesting. I’m the latter. So this hunt I thought would be appropriate to add some odd coins to the mix. As you see below there’s a mix of abnormal coins, some not in good shape, misprinted, or almost destroyed. But they have character, which I find interesting.

The recent Nor'easter brought a lot of erosion to the beaches. The weekend of the storm, I traveled out to Lemon Bar see how the beaches were handling the abuse. Sand felt like small stinging needles as it blew into your skin. Wind was blowing so hard in certain areas it was hard to walk. You could see in Neptune Beach the tide came up into the dunes in several locations. Hopefully that is the only storm we have this hurricane season. 2020 has been rough enough as is. It's certainly amazing what mother nature can do.

It's now the 7th month of 2020, and the south is really hot so lots of people are at Jacksonville Beaches. Metal detecting this past month I’ve seen lots of sandcastles, sand toys and trash, but not much treasure. Here's to hopefully someone finding something good today!

I've always had a fascination with error coins. So for today's cases we have an error coin in each. One is the 1954 die crack quarter and the other case holds a 1944 nickel with a die crack error. Summertime always makes me think of the beach. My family’s go to beach when I was young was Mexico City Beach, FL. It was there I fell in love with the ocean and beautiful white sands of the Gulf. Makes me wonder how many fond memories were made at Secret Beach as well.
