When you were a kid, did you often wonder what you would be doing when you reached a certain age? Many times I wondered if I would be happy, where I would be living, and what career path I'd taken. The underlying idea, would I be satisfied with how my life will have turned out as an adult? Little did I know how much responsibility comes with growing older, and those nasty things called bills that would keep showing up that I knew nothing of as a child.

But as I stand at the location of today's location, I look up at the construction of the new condo tower being built and wonder again what will this look like in 14-15 years? How much will the beach change over that time? Will Jax Beach continue to grow? One thing will be for sure, here in the coastal South it will always be too hot each summer.

And for our last location..

Between 18th and 19th St Atlantic Beach there was an underground house built in 1975 by architect William Morgan. Morgan said he built the two story two bedroom apartment home like a seashell. I’ve always loved to come over to this area to drive by the home. Such a unique place that has kept most of the design the architect first created.

So pick your parking lot for this one on either street. The hunt will take place between the two.

My favorite spot along A1A as I’ve mentioned several times in clues of the past was always at a gas station. Such a beautiful view as you look across the street into the vast Atlantic Ocean. Most locals already know what I’m referring to, but if you need a clue: 2700 S Ponte Vedra Blvd..

Welcome to the 4th anniversary celebration of Hunt the 27th!

As you can read back in previous clues, I started this hunt 4 years ago Memorial day weekend just out of the love of the hunt White’s detectors did at easter and love of metal detecting.

And I’ve not regretted it one bit..

I’ve met so many wonderful detectorists over the years, had many donations given to me, and had many photos with smiles texted to me with a case in hand. It always makes it worth the while to see those photos.

Jacksonville Beach’s “Opening of the Beaches” parade started in 1946. This year marks it’s 77th year of the tradition which travels thru the north part of Jax Beach, turning at 11th Ave North and making it’s way down 1st street to Beach Blvd. The event starts at 2pm this Sunday and is definitely a fun event. Full of treasures, but unlike those you’ll find today..

Spring Breakers have been flooding the beaches lately. It’s hard to find parking even though Jax Beach has numerous parking lots compared to most beaches with these large crowds. But it’s good to see tourists and locals out and about enjoying life, creating memories.

One the last large parking lots in north Jax Beach is where you’ll find today’s hunt. Once you enter the beach from the long walkway, turn north towards the church, hunting the next couple of blocks.

Since there’s love in the air, I thought I’d add some extra love on this February hunt.

There’s a second location with a seeded hunt and 1 more case. Now don’t be “sour” about it, but this street’s name in Neptune Beach can make you pucker up. However this seeded hunt is smaller. Only 1 block was seeded, and with only 1 case there to find, hopefully it will be worth the trouble of searching 1 more spot. Once you reach the pathway to Neptune Beach beside the bar, search one block south.

There was a crowd at Jax Beach tonight since there was a music festival this weekend. So to get away from the crowds, secretly planting this seeded hunt last night, I arrived at 16th ave south, turned right to go south, dropped some treasures there for a moment, then walked south towards 19th. This hunt will be between 19th and 21st ave south, full of bling and dings, and a surprise clue to be posted at 7:24 am.

It’s getting closer to that time of the year for Valentines day…..

When I was young, pagers were a popular way people communicated, you could consider it the “old way of texting”. People came up with ideas to communicate their love for one another as well. The famous 143 numbers always meant I love you when sent to a pager. But of course throughout the years, that’s not the only way people indirectly communicated their love for others. One of my favorite items from history were love tokens. Love tokens were often created from coins for a variety of reasons, but often to express one’s love to another. The giver’s initials were often engraved on one side of the coin with a hole punched through to be worn as jewelry. Some love tokens can be valuable due to the details the creator impressed into the token with a particular design. Each token is definitely unique and had a special meaning behind the gift.

So for today’s hunt I thought I would share my love and appreciation by hiding a love token in a heart shaped case among the other treasures found below. There are two other cases in the yellow hunt the 27th boxes that contain $27 each and Reale love in them as well. So add up all the love (1+4+3 = street) and let’s head north in Jax Beach to find our treasures.

2022 brought a lot of changes. There's been a lot of construction in Jax Beach this past year, to include a new hotel and the pier finally open to the public again.

With another tropical storm called Nicole at the beginning of November, a lot of the beaches along the coast were destroyed. Our dunes helped protect us at the beaches, but as you can see from the photo, there was a large amount of sand cut away. Many of the entrances at the Beaches were hard to walk, and still are. So be careful still as you adventure out, there’s a lot of hills and drop offs at beach entries.

Being the Christmas season is upon us, I decided to do extra presents to the community. So for today, there are three locations, from Jax Beach at 13 Ave South, 2nd Ave South and 7th Street in Atlantic Beach, with 2 cases at each location, among other treasures as usual. When you reach each entrance, you’ll travel north to find your treasures. At each location you will at least find the following:

2 cases with $27 in each and a coin. The coins could be a walking liberty half dollar, a large cent, or a peace dollar.

5 half dollars -not silver

8 silver dimes

2 silver quarters

7 V nickles

12 Wheat pennies

2 Indian head pennies

2 Gold filled pull tabs

1 pair of earrings

5 rings

4 Tokens

Among other various items as well. I’ve taken a few photos of some of the coins placed below, but since there was a large quantity with all the locations, I didn’t take photos of everything.

May I remind you, please stay out of the dunes. They’re protected by law anyway, and I didn’t put anything in the dunes of course. Make sure you try to protect them as much as possible.

The air has been cooler since the hurricane came through last month. It’s brought in beautiful sunrises and shadows of sunsets with beautiful blushes.

The local metal detecting club I’m a member of decided to have their annual seeded hunt on November 6th on 16th Ave North. The hunt starts at 9am, so I’m hoping that the sunrise is beautiful that morning as we wait for the public ticketholders to join in on the fun. Summer has ended now and temperatures are heading south. It's a nice change from the constant heat, but in a strange way it will be missed. As September usually does, we are facing the possibility of a hurricane this week. So here's to everyone's staying safe and the storms pass soon.

Since the season is changing I thought we would change it up a bit. Today defines will be different and not in their usual collection. You just never know what might be the case….. as we head between 19th Avenue South and 21st Ave South for today’s treasures.

Two roads diverged in a wood, and I—

I took the one less traveled by,

And that has made all the difference….

Sometimes I think about Robert Frost’s poem when I’m trying to decide which direction to detect on a beach. Often I’ve heard others comment, take the road less traveled, where other detectorists will not go. Those words over the years have helped me not find as many treasures, but more valuable things.

Today’s hunt begins at 19th Ave South and will go south to 21st Ave South. If you’re wondering where to park, it would be easiest to park at 16th Ave South and walk down to the first trashcan on the beach at 19th South crossover. Then hunt south towards 21st, where you’ll find the next trash can/walkover again. There is a turtle’s nest at this location, please note I would never hide anything near a nest so stay away from the area around it.

FOUND 05.27.2022 - The 3rd Anniversary

3 years of Hunt the 27th….Can’t believe it’s been this long now. I mean, what’s the odds?

I love what this hunt has created…..the friendships, the excitement, and a great community of hunters.

I’m lucky to live in the Jax Beach area that has lots of beach access points. This gives me the opportunity to hold the hunt at a variety of locations, with great parking access right next to the beach. While trying to come up with an idea for this year’s anniversary, I decided to bring back the idea of hiding cases in multiple locations. So 3 locations it is….

13th Ave North, 3rd Ave South and 7th Ave South all hold a bit of treasure today. When you arrive at the location of your choosing, hunt one block towards the pier.

As you see in the photos below, each location has 2 cases with the coin inside. $162 is yours to find along with a variety of other treasures. But here’s the catch, you’ll figure out which case group below is at the location you chose when you find your first item. You could be searching for the Barber, the Shield Nickel collection or the Gold plated Quarters collection. So what’s your odds that you’ll be searching for the collection you’re wanting most?

I always try to post clues close to sunrise. With temperatures on the rise as we come into summer, it gives us a chance to get out before the heat hits and to catch another beautiful sunrise. It also gives me the opportunity for another photo to add to my album.

Photography is my other love. Most photos on this site I took while detecting. I love to show the beauty we get to see while we enjoy this wonderful hobby. Sometimes I feel like a "Beach Drifter” while detecting, distracted by beautiful Florida, looking for that next great shot without paying attention to where I’ve detected. But somehow by the 11th hour I find something interesting while detecting, to put me back in focus, usually when I’m leaving the beach.

Footprints in the sand can be my demise when I hide the treasures for Hunt the 27th.

When the sand is smooth from no traffic and wind, it makes it so easy to see where I have walked. Although I’m never alone when I’m hiding the treasures, it can almost be clear where we were walking. So each time I try to get clever as to cover those tracks. Whether it’s walking in circles, zig zagging across or creating places that look like it could have been dug. And sometimes with these clever detectorist that come to this hunt (Thank you guys once again), I still can’t outsmart them.

So let’s see how long it takes everyone this time, footprints and all. Head to Pelican Point in Jax Beach. At the entrance from 19 Ave North, work the block towards the South.

If you’re out and about on SJC Beaches, you might have noticed some dark areas on the beach near the base of the dunes. The dark material is a special type of sand made up of heavy minerals rarely seen on Florida beaches.

These deposits are made up of small amounts of zircon, staurolite, titanium minerals (ilmenite, leucoxene and rutile), and garnet, all of which are “heavier” than the quartz and shell sand normally seen on the beach. After a storm event, the “heavier” mineral sands can accumulate into deposits after the “lighter” quartz and shell sands have been washed away by wave action, often called strand-line deposits.

Heavy mineral mining began in Florida in 1916 at Mineral City (now Ponte Vedra Beach). At one time, heavy minerals were mined from several locations along the east coast of Florida within ancient beach deposits from Boulogne to Vero Beach. Currently, the industry operates in Baker, Bradford, Clay and Duval counties.

So let's head to Mickler Beach this morning in Ponte Vedra. There head south and meet me so I can give you directions on which way to go.
